EqualiTeach, supported by a grant from the Improving Gender Balance team at the Institute of Physics, is holding a one-day training event bringing teachers together from across the East of England from primary, secondary and special schools, supporting them to promote gender equality and tackle sexism. Attendees will share good practice and explore ways to ensure that schools are safe places for young people to thrive regardless of gender.
These events will provide a safe space in which people are able to raise concerns in a non-judgemental, nonconfrontational, open and honest environment, ensuring that everybody feels able to contribute and knows that their opinion will be treated with respect. Learning will take place through a series of interactive and engaging workshops, with small group activities and whole group discussions, providing the opportunity for people to learn from each other as well as from the facilitators. All participants will leave with resources to support them back in their settings.
After attending the training, participants will:
- Recognise the perceptions and barriers that can prevent institutions and individuals from successfully promoting gender equality and tackling sex discrimination.
- Recognise the impact of gender stereotypes on pupils’ experiences of the classroom.
- Understand their equality duties under current legislation, including The Equality Act 2010.
- Be equipped with the techniques and skills required to open up discussions about gender equality with young people.
- Be equipped with sample activities which have proven to be effective in the classroom.
- Be equipped with techniques to effectively challenge sexist attitudes and behaviours.
- Have developed action plans and best practice approaches to promoting gender equality throughout their practice.
