Uniting Against the Far Right

What can we all do to help?

The past week has seen devastating scenes sweep the country. People who have been drip fed Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism through the mainstream media, social media and politicians, spilled out on to the streets. Their actions have caused devastation in our towns and cities and instilled fear into minoritised communities who are on the receiving end of this hatred and violence.

We join with the 80 anti-racist and migrant rights organisations, led by the Runnymede Trust, who are asking for Parliament to be recalled to address the scale of this crisis. We call upon our politicians and media to explicitly call out this racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia and show that there is no place for it in our society.

In addition, there are many things which we can all do to show solidarity with minoritised communities and to fight back against this wave of hatred:

  • By vocally condemning the racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia being expressed, as well as the violence itself
  • By joining a local anti-racism demonstration if it is safe for us to do so
  • By challenging misinformation and prejudice where we encounter it
  • By showing our support to local mosques and refugee communities
  • By participating in events which bring communities together and celebrate multiculturalism and diversity
  • By joining in local volunteering initiatives
  • By checking in with our friends, colleagues and neighbours

Over the past decade, EqualiTeach has been delivering workshops to young people, building their resilience to misinformation and disinformation, and helping to prevent and tackle issues such as racism, xenophobia, and Islamophobia. The past week has brought to the forefront how this work is needed more than ever. Another way in which you can help is to support charities such as ours to continue this vital work and inoculate the next generation against misinformation and hate.
